Generally caused by a combination of genetic, hormonal, dietary and environmental factors, acne breakouts can appear in mild, moderate and severe forms on the face and body. Any type of acne can lead to scarring, but typically, severe acne, which causes nodules – painful cysts or lumps to appear under the skin – can leave behind more serious markings.
There are three main types of acne scars:
Ice Pick scars – small, deep holes in the surface of your skin that look like the skin has been punctured with a sharp object
Rolling scars – a rolling and uneven appearance caused by bands of scar tissue that form under the skin
Boxcar scars – round or oval depressions, or craters, in the skin
A variety of laser treatment options can minimize the appearance of acne scars by targeting scar tissue. Some work to stimulate new collagen growth while others focus on the inflammation to decrease the appearance of markings. Some scars can be filled while others may be best addressed by subcision. The exact course of treatment depends on the patient’s individual skin condition.
Laser therapy is particularly effective in treating mild to moderate acne scarring with typical, but not guaranteed, improvement of up to 50 percent.
